Helping kids adjust to moving because of a divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 29, 2020 | Child Custody, Divorce |

As an adult, moving to a new Ohio home or apartment can be a stressful experience. However, it can be an especially stressful experience for a child of divorce who may be leaving friends, extended family members or other important people behind. The good news is that there are things that you can do to make a move easier on your son or daughter.

Stick to your current routine

Young people tend to adjust to new child custody arrangements in a positive manner when they are allowed to do so at their own pace. Ideally, in the days, weeks or months immediately following a move, you should strive to create a sense of familiarity for your kids. For instance, if you cook pancakes for breakfast on Saturday mornings, continue to do so in your new home.

Make your new house feel like your old home

It can be a good idea to decorate your child’s new room with items taken from your previous home. This will create a sense of security in what might otherwise be a chaotic time in your son or daughter’s life. In addition, you should let your child have input into any new features that might go into his or her room. For instance, he or she should be able to choose the color that the walls are painted or the type of curtains that are placed over the windows.

It’s important to take your son or daughter’s feelings into account when choosing to move to a new home or apartment. If you have any concerns about how relocating might impact a child custody agreement, don’t hesitate to talk to an attorney. Legal counsel may be able to help you better understand your rights as it relates to moving after a divorce.
