Overall, 48.1 percent of the state was married in that year, making it number 33 in the country.

Nationally, there are more than 1 million divorce cases filed annually. However, the divorce rate has fallen from 4 people per 1,000 Americans in 2000 to about 2.9 per 1,000 Americans in 2017. At the same time, the national marriage rate fell to 6.9 people per 1,000 residents from 8.2 per 1,000 in 2000. Individuals were only considered divorced for the purposes of the Census Bureau's 2017 American Community Survey if they were legally divorced. Those who had not yet finalized their divorce were regarded as separated. Utah, Idaho and Wyoming were the states with the highest percentage of married residents while Louisiana, New York and Mississippi had the lowest percentage of married residents. Population numbers for the survey were determined using a five-year average.

The end of a marriage may mean that a couple has to resolve multiple issues related to their finances and how to raise their children. Many of these decisions may be made through a prenuptial agreement. In many cases, parents can create a parenting plan that will then be approved or denied by a judge. However, the law generally prefers that parents work out their issues on their own. An attorney may assist with the process of resolving issues related to divorce.
